Michael Neeson, son of actor Liam Neeson, has just been set for his first major film role. He will play the role of famed Irish revolutionary Michael Collins in The Rising, reprising the role his father made famous almost 20 years ago in Michael Collins. The film stars Colin Morgan (Merlin), who plays the lead role of Irish freedom fighter Sean McDermott, and David O’Hara (Braveheart) who plays revolutionary leader James Connolly.

It’s been a big news day for movies about real-life figures from Irish political history. While Timothy Spall is (likely) set to play controversial Northern Irish politician Ian Paisley in a film about The Troubles, first-time actor (excepting a small appearance in Anchorman 2) and Liam Neeson’s son Michael Neeson is (definitely) set to play more beloved Irish patriot Michael Collins in The Rising, which will focus on the Easter Rising of 1916, one of the most important political events in Irish history (as well as one of the most art-inspiring). And, yes, that is the role his father played in the 1996 Neil Jordan biopic Michael Collins. One might even say Michael is takin’ (“Taken”) after his father, if one wanted to say a thing like that.

I’m always a little sad to see the names mentioned in association with the Rising and Sean MacDiarmada’s absent. And Yeats left out Clarke, too. I suppose they think the others are ‘more romantic.’ I thought Liam Neeson did a good job in Michael Collins. My biggest gripe with that film is that the history got lost behind the whole love triangle story, which I guess they thought would appeal to a broader audience.
They’re making a film about Ian Paisley? No idea what he actually looked like, but, to me, he always conjures up images of that preacher who wanted to burn the Korans. It should be an interesting film.

Sean MacDiarmada is often referred to as Sean McDermott. Apparently the English shortened it in their writings, perhaps not being able to pronounce the Irish original. It is a little confusing because it can appear these are two different people rather than one.

He actually used McDermott himself. There are things where he wrote his own name that way, along with using John (they really need to republish that biography). It became part of the movement to begin using the Gaelic. Many people did it. He signed the declaration as Diarmada. His name is second after Clarke, but Pearse’s name (and picture) always get top billing. He got pretty short shift in the Michael Collins film, too, which might be coloring my view of it. They made it seem like Collins (who played a very small part) and De Velera (who made some questionable decisions) were the men who made it all happen.
